PLAN - a distribution center

Planning for distribution centers requires a firm understanding of each of a components of the distribution center and the amount of time required to evaluate and complete each component. This is true for a lease, purchase or ground-up construction project. Typically, the real estate, transportation, and employment end up being the top three cost items and therefore command the highest level of attention.

The Project Manager must carefully adhere to a carefully prepared project schedule in order to have all elements come together at the appropriate time. For example, a distribution center project could overcome tremendous municipal approval challenges, weather delays, etc. and be completed on time, yet have a 60 day delay for the installation of data lines, the delivery of racking or automated material handling.

It is through a carefully managed project schedule that costs can be controlled and minimized. When negotiating for any component of the project, one can expect to pay premiums when inadequate time is allowed to make a decision, complete a study, obtain an approval, or complete construction.

This site takes you through a process from a macro level to a micro level. You may be able to bypass some of the initial steps if the location or design is already known. Possibly you are looking to manage or improve an existing facility that is already owned or leased.
